Easy Healthy High Protein Hummus Recipe (Creamy)

What is Hummus?

Hummus has become a very popular dip and can now be found in almost every grocery store. It’s essentially a versatile dip or spread originating from the Middle East, known for its creamy texture and delicious taste.

The main ingredients include chick peas, tahini (which is made from ground sesame seeds), Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice, cloves of garlic, and salt (you can also use sea salt). Typically, it’s served with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and enjoyed with pita bread. It’s a healthy snack option that can be used as a dip or added to various dishes like grain bowls, sandwiches, or salads.

Now, onto my high-protein hummus recipe. This recipe is a classic Lebanese version that I learned from my parents. Drawing from both of their preferences—one for extra lemony flavor, the other for an extra kick of garlic. I’ve combined the best of both worlds and the best of my world as being a dietitian to create what I believe is the ultimate hummus recipe.

Not only because it tastes amazing, but it is also packs in extra protein.

Ingredients to Make Easy Hummus Recipe

  1. Chickpeas: These legumes serve as the hearty base of your hummus. You have a few options here: start with dry chickpeas and pressure cook them. You can also use canned chickpeas and boil them briefly to soften. Or, you can choose canned chickpeas and soak them in warm water with baking soda before peeling off the skin. For the last method, you’ll need approximately 1.5 teaspoons of baking soda for every 15 oz can of chickpeas. Soaking with baking soda takes about 5 minutes and yields the best texture.
  2. Tahini: An important component of hummus. Tahini adds richness and depth of flavor. Not all tahini is created equal, so look for high-quality brands with only one ingredient: mechanically hulled sesame seeds. Ensure the tahini is well-blended and not separated in the jar; if it has separated, give it a good stir before adding it to the food processor.
  3. Lemon: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds brightness and acidity to your hummus. Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best flavor.
  4. Garlic: Fresh garlic provides that unmistakable savory kick to your hummus. Avoid pre-peeled garlic, as it may lack the robust flavor of fresh cloves. Before adding garlic to the food processor, ensure there are no green sprouts growing in the middle of the cloves; if present, remove them to prevent any bitterness in your hummus.
  5. Greek Yogurt: Incorporating Greek yogurt into your hummus not only enhances its creaminess but also boosts its protein content. You can also use cottage cheese if you prefer! Opt for plain Greek yogurt for a tangy flavor that complements the other ingredients perfectly.

How to Make this High-Protein Hummus Recipe

  1. Begin by preparing the chickpeas. Place them in a large bowl of warm water. Rub the chickpeas gently between your fingers to loosen the skins, which will start to float to the surface of the water. Use a slotted spoon to skim off and discard the skins.
  2. Transfer the peeled chickpeas to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse them until they reach a fine, breadcrumb-like texture, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. This should take about 15 seconds in total.
  3. Next, add the freshly squeezed lemon juice, tahini, minced garlic, salt, Greek yogurt, and ice cubes to the food processor.
  4. Blend the ingredients until the mixture looks like a smooth paste. You may need to pause and scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to ensure everything is evenly incorporated.
  5. Once blended to perfection, taste the hummus and adjust the flavor as needed. You can add more lemon juice for extra tanginess or salt to enhance the seasoning.
  6. Transfer the finished hummus to a serving bowl and garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of paprika or hot chili pepper, and fresh parsley if desired.
  7. Serve your homemade high-protein hummus with your favorite accompaniments, such as vegetable sticks, pita bread, or crackers. You can also sprinkle some hemp seeds or red pepper flakes for extra spiciness and protein.

Tips for making the best high protein hummus recipe

  1. Soak chickpeas in baking soda. Whether you’re boiling, soaking, or pressure cooking your chickpeas, adding a bit of baking soda to the water can work wonders. Not only does it help soften the skins, making them easier to peel or blend, but it can also aid in reducing gas and bloating—a win-win situation!
  2. Peel the chickpeas. While it may seem like a tedious task, peeling the chickpeas can make a world of difference in achieving a smooth and creamy texture for your homemade hummus. Trust me, the extra effort will be well worth it once you taste the difference.
  3. Add ice cubes to the blender. This unconventional tip might sound a bit strange, but bear with me—it works like magic. Adding a couple of ice cubes to the blender along with the tahini, lemon, and garlic helps create a silky-smooth texture reminiscent of freshly churned ice cream. It’s a game-changer for achieving that perfect hummus consistency. You can add a little bit of cold water instead, but an ice cube works best.
  4. Use a strong blender or food processor and blend for at least 4-5 minutes. The key to achieving that ultra-creamy texture lies in the blending process. Investing in a high-speed blender or food processor is essential, as it can make a significant difference in the final outcome. Be patient and blend for at least 4-5 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed, to ensure that every last bit is perfectly smooth and creamy.
